The importance of GPS was greatly increased for aviation after the completion of the GPS satellite constellation in December of 1993. The Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) is being developed for operational use in the United States and also a similar system, European Geostationary Navigation Oerlay Service (EGNOS), is also under development in Europe. There are needs to develop Wide Area Differential GPS (WADGPS) covering Korea to complete the GNSS mentioned above. The GNSS then allows international aviation users to fly world wide with a single avionic system. In case of DGPS, it can cover within 100km and needs many stations for serving the widely-spreaded users. But WADGPS can cover wide area via fewer stations than DGPS. In this paper we propose an Korea version of WADGPS and discuss on algorithms and performances.

Determination of position, velocity and time from the satellite signals is the central problem of the GPS receiver. Generally, GPS receiver uses least square method for navigation filter algorithm. The Kalman filter has known as an optimal linear estimator, which uses the knowledge of the system dynamics and the statistical characteristics of the system noises and measurement error. In this paper, we design an 8 state Kalman filter for GPS navigation and employ some techniques that can reduce computational burden, increase numerical stability, and improve filtering performance. To show its effectiveness, the designed filter is implemented in a GPS receiver and tested in real-time.

A multi-channel digital GPS receiver has been developed including a RF-to IF engine (engine 1), a digital signal processing engine (engine 2) with a microprocessor interfacing, and a navigation software. A high speed SiGe heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) as a active device has been mounted on chip-on-boatd (COB) type hybrid ICs such as LNA, mixer, and VCO in RF front-end of the engine 1 board. A 6-channel digital correlator together with a real-time clock and a microprocessor interface has been realized using an Altera Flex 10K FPGA as well as ASIC technology. Navigation software controlling the correlator for GPS signal tracking, retrieval and storing a message retrieval, and position calculation has been implemented. The GPs receiver was tested using a single channel STR2770 simulator. Successful navigation message retrieval and position determination was confirmed.

Over last decade Multiple Target Tracking (MTT) has been the subject of numerous presentations and conferences [1979·1990]. Various approaches have been proposed to solve the problem. Representative works in the problem are Nearest Neighbor (NN) method based on non-probabilistic data association (DA), Multiple Hypothesis Test (MHT) and Joint Probabilistic Data Association (JPDA) as the probabilistic approaches. These techniques have their own advantages and limitations in computational requirements and in the tracking performances. In this paper, the three promising algorithms based on the NN standard filter, MHT and IPDA methods are presented and their performances against simulated multiple maneuvering targets are compared through numerical simulations.

In this paper, the modified aviation TDMA protocol that can improve the aeronautical communication spectrum utilization is studied to satisfy the increasing air traffic demands. Currently European states proposed the scheme reducing the channel spacing from current 25 kHz to 8.33 kHz and U. S. FAA proposed the system using TDMA technique that divides access into four parallel circuits. The modified aviation TDMA protocol can complement the defects of these current systems. In modified aviation TDMA protocol, message channel that is used between aircraft and ground station is divided into uplink channel and downlink channel. After receiving the acknowledgement of the reservation request, aircraft sends messages at the allocated slots. Numerical analysis and simulation results show that the modified aviation TDMA scheme has high channel efficiency in the aviation environment.

In this paper, we construct a navigation geography database using R-tree, and develop a software for avionics systems such as VOR, ILS, DME, and NDB. First, we design the navigation geography database using R-tree, and construct a database for navigation aids facilities of every airport. In order to implement avionics software, we develop some calculating algorithms for distance, bearing, and deviation angle between an aircraft and a VOR station for VOR, and deviation angle from a LLZ, glide slope from a GP, and range of markers for ILS. The navigation geography database system is composed of map data manager which can construct and update the database, real-time searcher which provides information about the avionics system, geography database, and user interface.

In this pape, the performances of two noncoherent code tracking loops, I. e., traditional code tracking loop(TCTL) and modified code tracking loop(MCTL) and analyzed and compared in a CDMA mobile environment. Closed-form formulas for steady-state jitter variance are derived analytically for the two schemes as a function of the pulse shaping filter, timing offset, signal-to-interference ratio, and loop bandwidth. The design issues of the loop filter are also addressed with emphasis on the second-oredr tracking loop. Finally, the degradation of BER performance due to timing errors is examined in a CDMA reverse link for IMT-2000 designed by ETRI.

A Study on the Strategies for Incheon International Airport to be a Successful Hub Airport in Northeast Asia

The construction of Incheon International Airport(IIA) was planned in order to meet the national air transport demand which has been rapidly increased, and to be a major hub airport in Northeast Asia. However, it is inevitable to compete with Japanese airports because Japanese government also planned to expand greatly the airport capacity in Tokyo area and Kansai Airport in Osaka area. Since a hub airport should have convenient connecting flights to spoke cities, it is required for IIA to have plenty of short-haul flights to the cities around Seoul, for example, to the cities in East China, Japan and other East Asian countries. IIA authority and Korean national air carriers should coordinate to develop air transport demand for short-haul international route and establish efficient hub-spoke flight schedules. This would be a essential precondition to function as a hinterland hub in Northeast Asia. Reflecting the geographical postion, the function as a hourglass hub could be possible, if IIA is utilised by major airlines as a bridge to connect passengers between cities in Southeast Asia and cities in North America. To be a successful hourglass hub, the Korean national carriers must try to engage in the joint operations or the alliances with the major airlines of Southeastern countries or North American countries. All of these could be accomplished through the cooperation among government, airport and natinonal air carriers.
